about

i've always thought
that poems have lived a life
before they are written

sometimes they begin in trees or 
a grocery store aisle
or the silence after someone
outbursts

sometimes they wait years inside 
the body until 
my fingers are finally willing
to carry them

i write because i don't know another way
to listen - -

my work wanders through memory,
questions,
ordinary afternoons,
complaints,
roads home,
and the mad habit we have
of trying to name things
that were never meant to stay

                        (still)

i spend most of my days making - -
singing,
composing,
teaching - -
so to me it is inevitable
that my poems care as much about breath
as they care for 

i am not interested in answers - -
        (that is not what the echoes reply - -)

i am not interested in certainty - -
        (maybe only for the moment
         when two discover
         they have carried
         the same impossible thing - -)

i just try to   
behold all that i can.
